New York Fashion Week Highlights

Posted: Sep 15 2015

Hello Fashionistas!

It's NYFW (New York Fashion Week) and we are totally excited! Today marks the 6th day of fashion week in the Big Apple. Everything about Spring/Summer 2016 is sure to please. We have been watching all week and these are some of the designers that stood out for us:

Rebecca Minkoff- We have been following her ever since she started her line back in 2001. Starting her small boutique in San Diego back in 2003, she touches our hearts with her Cali roots but still seems to pull together styles that push the envelope in fashion no matter where you are in the world. Her first hit was with the "Morning After Bag" in 2005 which caused an overnight sensation. After her growth in accessories she decided in 2009 to start designing clothing again. She kicked off her runway show with a full band featuring Michigan based artist BØRNS, which really set the mood. She is all about fringe and suede this year along with her signature leather pieces. This year however she has opened up two stores in California, one up in San Francisco and the newest location in Hollywood. Rebecca showcased her ready-to-wear line which will be offered in stores only at a moderate price. She definitely pulled it together with her simple lines, minimalism and of course those wonderful fringed bags. Anything Rebecca Minkoff should be a staple in every girl's closet.

Derek Lam- A hidden gem from San Francisco, Derek Lam, has been designing everything from eye-wear, shoes and clothing since he graduated from Parsons School of Design. Lam designed for 4 years with Michael Kors before embarking on his own path. He finally founded his own company in 2011 and has been on the lowdown until this year. He creates luxury products with a modern sensibility, known for its calculated simplicity and thoughtful detailing. Functional daily use with a high-end price tag. His 2016 collection screams boho chic without the having to use outlandish prints or colors. Using the least amount of fringe he still managed to pull off the impeccable clean style and look. Signature pieces include raw silk sheath dresses with plunging necklines, wide-leg trousers in various wools and cashmere pea coats cinched with stiff silk belts. When he isn't designing for his own brand he is busy as the Creative Director of Accessories for Italian based chain boutique, Tod's. His ready-to-wear collection is already available on his website.

Tommy Hilfiger- The classic and timeless brand stepped outside of the box this year with bright and eye-catching prints and colors. He literally brought the beach to fashion week (literally a mini lagoon, with models walking down a wooden dock that served as the runway). The collection was inspired by the ultra-luxe private island of ,Mustique, a small island located near St. Vincent where Hilfiger has a vacation home. The footwear kept in mind this carefree, beachy spirit, featuring multiple riffs on island staples like the espadrille and sandal. He dazzled us with summer dresses with bright tropical floral prints. Sandal styles and dress hems were done in a variety of crocheted fabrics in traditional Rastafarian colors (greens, reds, yellows, blues). At first glance you are a little thrown off by so many colors but in the end, it just works. This ready-to-wear collection will be available by March 2016.

Stay tuned for more coverage as NYFW comes to an end. In the meantime, check out the links below and let us know what you think by leaving us a comment!
